Just a quickie today. I like to shoot flies when I can, it is challenging and also could have other artistic implications if you are prone to giving meaning to things like that.
I got this guy to cooperate for a few frames before he flew off. Shot on my desk with a piece of paper, a 55mm macro lens and a small cheap ring flash. Not too bad for 30 min work.

I recently had two pieces of art in a collective show at The Coconino Center For The Arts. One was an inkjet image lift transfer taken on the Queen Mary. The Second was a tea-toned cyanotype of a studio portrait I took last year.
While the show was hanging, students from the Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy (FALA) went to view the work. The students assignment was to photograph a piece they liked and write a story about it. One student, Kaia Rodriguez, chose mine. After the show the artists whose pieces were chosen were given the finished assignment. Please click the above image to see it larger and read the story.
Here is the original cyanotype as it appeared in the show. It is interesting to me the way that different people interpret a photo. The only info that hung with the image was that it was a tea-toned cyanotype titled ‘Emily’ (the models name). The creative story this student came up with is great. Thanks to everyone at FALA and especially the student who took the time to look deeper into my piece.
For any of you who might get a chuckle out of the title of this post I am sorry for the lost hours of your life that you will never get back (not really, it was fun). For everyone else, just know that I have been a little walkabout lately and have some street scenes to prove it. This post is a little all over the place, but hang tough and be rewarded. For those of you who follow this blog or who know me and have had to listen to me regale you with stories of my (still not functional) Leafscan 45 and the quest for outdated technology to get this dinosaur of a film scanner to work…well it still doesn’t work, but I found a solution to my problems, it’s not quite as good, but not a bad DIY solution…
I have been spending a lot of time lately in the darkroom developing film. There is something about the look and feel of film that can never be achieved with more contemporary and accessible digital technology. I could debate the differences and why one is superior to the other for hours, but I will save that for another post. This week I shot a few rolls on my Kodak Bantam. If you have stopped by the blog lately you may remember seeing a camera collection update post. One of the new (to me at least) cameras as the No. 1A Autographic Kodak Junior. This beauty is from about 1920, still light tight and functional. How many cameras produced today will still be functional in 90 years? Probably not very many. Yesterday afternoon while laying in bed for an afternoon siesta, I had a crazy idea to make a pinhole attachment for my digital camera body. I gathered the supplies and proceded to make it happen. The following images are what has resulted so far. They are fairly experimental in nature, no sharp focus, blurry motion, colors are off something, but that isn’t the point I guess….
