Compositionally Speaking Of Course…

This week my students in Photo 181 were required to shoot images representing ‘Rules of Composition.’ A lot of them did really well, some not so much…Busy compositions, camera shake and things creeping into the corners of frames were common issues. They were prompted to keep an eye out for things like, texture, form, patterns/symmetry, lines, depth, perspective, rule-of-thirds etc. etc.

In an on-going effort to practice what I preach and actually shoot what I assign, here are a few images I shot for this assignment. Hit the link to view everything…

I have been helping my friend Matt Beaty with his Capstone project, which is Automobile photography. Last week, I drove his Saab Turbo while he sat in the back of his girl friends car and shot me going down the highway. See those images here…

This week I was supposed to drive the photo car while he shot some BMW motorcycles…with a 7:30am call time, the client cancelled about 6:00am. We were both up so instead headed out to the Coconino County Fairgrounds to shoot some stuff at sunrise. It isn’t very often I (or I imagine Matt) am up early enough to shoot anything around sunrise…

We headed out to the semi-abandoned horse racing track and proceded to shoot compositions, details and the like…

The rest of this set represent an hour or two of walking in the brisk (freezing) Flagstaff morning. I will shut up and just let the images speak for themselves…

A fine morning spent shooting. Despite the cold, exploring the stands and grounds was quite fun. Stay tuned for more fun stuff all weekend…
