Sports, Science and a Little Logging

Volleyball and football seasons are going strong, Flagstaff continued it’s annual Festival of Science and I toured a logging operation to wrap up September and kick off October.

A Fair, Two Portraits and Some Mining

Have you ever wondered who makes up the staff at the Arizona Daily Sun? No? Well I was asked to photograph the news room staff for an award ceremony, below is almost everyone. Stereotypes about the auto repair industry being male dominated? One young lady is helping to break that apart, see photo below. Local residents are upset about a possible gravel mine being built, and I was able to attend the Coconino County Fair for the first time ever last weekend, pretty good stuff, pretty diverse weekend.

Saving Rivers and Building More Buildings

Below are two photos essays I worked on over the past few weeks that have finally published in print, and thusly, here. First up is a story about efforts to save and restore the Verde River, a critical desert riparian habitat. Please read the original story here…

Second up is less of an essay per se, and maybe more of a tour of a new building. With the growth of Northern Arizona University comes the need to house all of these new students. Insert high-density, student-oriented housing complexes all over town. *editorial* The rents are high, social problems are many, their soul is engineered, but the steady march forward seems unavoidable. : Kayaks sit at the edge of the Verde River before a paddle tour in August. Doug Von Gausig, the mayor of Clarkdale and director of the Verde River Institute, leads the kayak trips at least once a week to boost the profile of the river as an economic driver in the valley.

: Before he leads kayak trips down the Verde River, Verde River Institute Director Doug Von Gausig talks about the history of the rare desert river, as well as the efforts underway to preserve it.

Last week was not a very busy week in news; however, high school sports season is in full swing. Three football games in as many days kicked off what is really beginning to feel like fall here in Flagstaff.

Fairly diverse week as far as assignments go. Did everything from a river tour, more on that in a few weeks, checked out a local air show, toured area artist studios and watched as 4-H Club kids prepared for the annual Coconino County Fair.
