I’m a Star Now

As you may or may not know, in addition to working for the local Flagstaff newspaper, The Arizona Daily Sun, I spend half my week working in a professional darkroom (yes that’s still a thing) making prints for all sorts of clients. Artists, government agencies and other private individuals are among the people I work with. I have prints that are in the Library of Congress, the JFK Library, hotels, offices as well as galleries and homes all over the country. Specific clients that I do regular printing for include Dan Budnik, Shane Knight, David Brookover, Jerry Jacka and more…

Recently a student at Northern Arizona University, Nick Humphries, approached me to ask if he could do a short documentary project for class about me and what I do photographically. After talking for a while, I suggested that while the newspaper is interesting, he should see what I do at the darkroom. He did, I talked into a microphone about it and below is the finished project. I thought it came out pretty well, enjoy…

Update::There was a slightly updated version of the video that includes a few more photos and a surprise ending featuring surprise stuff.

Changing of the Guard::My journey into shooting Canon…

_DSC0855

For those of you who know me, or have followed this blog with any regularity, you will know that I have been a loyal Nikon shooter since I took the digital plunge back in 2005 or so…I started with a D70s, moved onto a D300s and have been through several D200’s. They have (for the most part) worked swimmingly and I couldn’t have been happier…

Again, for those who know me personally, you know that late last year I managed the impossible, I was hired as a staff photographer, at a news paper, like a real, daily print paper (yes they still exist, and so do photo jobs). While the paper has lots of Nikon pool lenses, their camera body selection is, well, less than optimal. Which is why until last week, I opted to use my personal D300s for assignments.

What happened last week you may ask? The frame count passed 167,700 images on that camera, and it decided to go to that great gear grave yard in the sky. And while this is a tragic event (there is no way I can afford a new camera right now), it couldn’t have been better timed. The very next day, my editor at the paper called me up and told me I was switching to Canon and that he had a brand new 5dMkIII and the classic trifecta of lenses  and flashes for me…

I will shoot on anything. Personally, I don’t believe in the Nikon/Canon debate (everyone knows Leica is the best anyway). A camera is just a tool, it’s vision and technical expertise that really matter. Either way, today I start a new series on this blog about my journey into a Canon shooter. Like Luther before me I will be nailing a list of grievances to this blog’s wall as well as discussing the success’s and surprises along the way…

Stay tuned in the next day or so for my initial reactions from my first couple assignments with the new rig in my hands…

Winter Storm On It’s Way

Flagstaff is supposed to be hit with what could be our first real winter storm this weekend. I drove to the edge of the Mogollon Rim to check out the clouds as they roll into Flagstaff. Although it came close, the sun never broke through the clouds to give a little color to the sunset; however, considering the frigid nature of this storm system, I think I prefer the cold color palette in these photos…
