Camera Collection Update

Here is an update to my running series documenting my collection of cameras. You can see the previous post here.

nikon em I spent the morning running errands, on the way I hit up a few local thrift stores, they are always fun and sometimes they have good camera gear. The first stop at Savers was ok. They had a 55mm Canon lens, and a crappy zoom lens, decided to but Highlander on VHS instead. Next stop at the Goodwill was much better. They had this old Nikon EM with a 50mm f/1.8 Nikon lens, it also has a battery pack/motor drive attached, i had to have it. I don’t have a 50mm lens for my Nikon system yet, and since it’s the classic focal length i bought it up. Also had a cool battery pack for an off camera flash, but it was missing the charging cord, passed on that. The EM was marketed as an entry level SLR that only has an aperture priority mode to make use easy for the uninitiated. The camera body is fairly cheap and will likely sit on the wall, however, since Nikon never changed their mounting system (shame Canon) i put this beauty onto my Nikon DSLR and will be using it frequently.

Behind the Scenes-Grand Falls

grand falls

Yesterday afternoon, Matt Beaty and Andrew Paffrath of The Visual Collective, and Katie McKinnon, who as it turns out is my neighbor, drove out to Grand Falls, Ariz. The river wasn’t very high and we were able to hike down and behind part of the falls, keep reading to see pics and other behind the scenes stuff… Continue reading

Industrial Composition

“Industrial Composition” is a portfolio I am constantly working on. It is a major reason I carry a camera everywhere, someday i see it as a solo exhibition, for the last few years I have  been gathering the images, here are the latest three taken today at Two Arrows, Ariz.

I have a ton of these kinds of image, some are more successful than others, when the coffee table book hits the shelves or the gallery showing opens i will let my loyal readers know. Until then, if you own a book publisher or gallery and would like to represent this portfolio, let me know.

Behind the scenes: Twin Arrows, Ariz.

looking through the lensToday was destined to be a great photography day. Originally, I was going to help out Matt Beaty of Vault Photography with an advertisement shoot for a local Car Dealership he has been working with. The plan was to get a new Subaru WRX and drive it around to get action shots. When we arrived at the dealership, they had not only sold the car earlier that week but didn’t have time to deal with us that day and sent us packing. Not to be discouraged, Matt, Andrew Paffrath (who was along to shoot some video) and I grabbed our gear, called up the beautiful Alexandra Felix to model and headed out to Twin Arrows, Ariz. to have some fun and get our creative on. Hit the link to see more photos and read more about our adventure. (the above shot is the back of Andrews T2-I taped to the dash, recording the ride there.) Continue reading

something from the archives

I was browsing through a few old image folders on my computer. These three images caught my eye for their use of motion and composition. I was setting up for a different shot, when suddenly there was a decisive moment of peak action when i pressed the shutter and gave 1/60 of a second in time immortality. I liked that they all had something in common and work well together.

55mm micro management

ganesha

One thing I love about shooting a Nikon is that they never changed their lens mounting system (shame Canon), so all the old school fixed/manual lenses kicking around still work with my digital body. This week I have been playing with a 55mm f/3.5 micro lens. It can focus on objects as close as about 2” and at f/3.5 the depth of field is razor thin but also very sharp (if i can hold the camera steady enough). It is a lot of fun to look at the world on such a tiny scale and to see compositions all around me. There is very little technical data to provide for these images as they are mostly available light so i will just put them out there and not talk too much, continue reading to see a few of my favorite examples. As always, click on the photos to see a slightly larger version.

photo shoot 2`5`2011 pt. 1 the story

This week saw a long harbored concept cone to life. About a year ago i had the idea to have a highly styled girl holding some poor chaps heart in her hand. It would be bloody, but not horror…more Gothic in theme. The male wouldn’t necessarily be dead either, it is kind of more of a succubus stealing your vitality thing. That was as far as the idea ever got, until about a month ago when i met Melissa Misfortune via Model Mayhem. keep reading to see a preview of images and find out how much trouble went into this shoot and how it almost completely fall apart a few times…
